Winnie Harlow met April Star and demonstrated why model diversity matters

September 20, 2015

Last week, The Real invited model Winne Harlow to surprise one of her biggest fans, 10-year old aspiring model, April Star. The two share the same skin disorder, vitiligo, their exchange beautifully demonstrates the importance of diverse beauty within the fashion industry.

April, the social media sensation, created her instagram account @RedefinedMyBeauty to raise awareness about her condition and show the world she's no different to anyone else. Whilst on the show, one presenter asked Star who her idols are, she began listing names of models with skin disorders: Harlow and albino model Shaun Ross. Am suggests to give Harlow a call, to later reveal she’s actually backstage. Harlow joins the stage taking a seat next to April and began discussing her own body issues as a child.

Harlow dropped out of high school due to bullying about her appearance, the experience empowered her stating she would never ‘allow bullies to make that big of an impact’ on her life again.“Every time I see [Star] all over the internet and social media, I see the little girl I could have been at her age”.
