Artist Lu Williams is bringing over 40 artists and publishers to Village Green Festival with Grrrl Zine Fair.
In celebration of DIY creativity everywhere and in a bid to make festival line-ups more diverse, Village Green announce a brand new area curated by Grrrl Zine Fair. At the forefront of its ethos is the positive promotion of creative output made by women, LGBTQI+ and non-binary people. However, the area welcomes all genders, ages and abilities and prides itself on being inclusive. Sean McLoughlin, the festival director, said, "Village Green is a festival that celebrates the great diversity of Southend and the local community alongside talent from the area, and national and international acts. Grrrl Zine is an exciting addition to Village Green this year aiming to showcase the lack of representation between gender groups and celebrate gender and social diversity."
The lack of diversity for festival line-ups has made headlines over the years, and the music industry is still; unfortunately, a male dominated market. Glastonbury famously created an all-female stage last year, after their 2015 festival line-up was made up of 86% men. "Festival bookings overall remain far from gender-neutral—of the 996 acts we logged, only 14 percent were female, with an additional 12 percent from groups with male and female (or non-binary) members." So, as a festival, Village Green is committed to making a difference when it comes to gender equality and promoting diversity" said Sean McLoughlin.
