Not one to shy away from challenging social norms and traditional "ideals" of womanhood, for her second London solo-show, illustrator Venus Libido invites you to discuss the stigmas attached to our body hair.
"Why can’t we touch it, why can’t we lick it... and why can’t we sit on its metaphorical face?" asks the show.
"Hair is considered beautiful when it's on our heads, but not on our legs." Says Venus to BRICKS. "Growing up as young girls we are all so eager to shave our legs, armpits and our vaginas. But for me, and for most girls, it's not because we want to, but because society tells us to. Boys would think It was gross and others would call it dirty. Being a hairy woman was never an option and would never pass as sexy. This idea that hair should not exist on a woman body is something I want to challenge and change."
Breaking away from framed pieces and ‘do not touch’ signs, the show hosted at Unripe Banana on Hackney Road will unconventionally allow you to "play and touch". "You can come and place a part of your own body hair into the space," she continues. "As you enter the room, you will be handed a wax strip where you are free to wax any part of your body and place it onto the walls. Hair instantly has a different effect on people as soon as it leaves our body. I want to make people think about why this is."
Including a selection of Venus’s current work, with a touch of Unripe Banana thrown in, HAIRY hopes to leave you feeling empowered, while making you laugh at the same time.
